Vision for the Conversation
We are exploring how Summerside can build a sustainable, shared cultural space that truly meets the needs of artists across disciplines.
The long-term vision is to:
-
Strengthen Summerside’s cultural ecosystem.
-
Support collaboration and community among artists.
-
Make cultural participation more visible, accessible, and sustainable.
-
Learn from existing models across Canada and beyond to design something that works for Summerside.
Summary of First Meeting on Aug. 22
We determined what we’re trying to accomplish:
- Map capacity: Identify what spaces already exist and the unique assets they bring (performance, rehearsal, messy work, quiet focus, teaching, retail, etc.).
- Assess fit: Consider whether current venues already meet artists’ needs—or how they might be adapted to do so.
- Spot the gaps: Understand what is missing or underdeveloped (e.g. affordable shared studios, open public art spaces, rehearsal pods).
- Connect leaders: Bring venue managers and cultural leaders into the conversation to spark collaboration.
- Ground ideas: Test how proposed models (Arts Market Co-op, Shared Studios, Maker Space, etc.) could take shape in Summerside.
Next Steps
- Organize Venue Crawl
-
Invite managers/representatives from identified venues (e.g. Harbourfront Theatre, Eptek Centre, College of Piping, Summerside Library, Culture Summerside Venues, community centres, etc.).
-
Plan a route to showcase a variety of cultural spaces (heritage, performance, studio, retail, informal gathering).
-
Provide an opportunity for these individuals to share the opportunities available for artists in their space(s), their hopes and vision for their space/organization.
-
- Guided Conversation During the Crawl
-
Ask: What works well in this space? What barriers exist? How could this space evolve to serve artists better?
-
Explore: Who currently uses the space? Who might use it if adjustments were made?
-
The venue crawl is both a fact-finding mission and a relationship-building exercise. By seeing what already exists and engaging leaders directly, we can clarify what Summerside needs most, and start shaping a roadmap toward a sustainable, shared cultural hub.
